Orchids have been in my life for just over a year, which was enough to hook me and reel me into the world of orchid care. This post is linked to in Ridge Haven Homestead’s Sunday Sunshine Blog Hop. Click the link to learn more about them.
Orchid Care Made Easy
Orchids can be a little bit tricky to truly understand and cultivate, which is why they are an amazing plant to get your hands on and just give it a try! They are one of the most beautiful, yet most delicate plants in the world. If cared for correctly, your orchid will amaze you for many years to come! Read along to understand how exactly to do that.
History of Orchids
Orchids can trace their origins back to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where they were cherished by Indigenous civilizations for their beauty and believed to possess magical properties. In the 19th century, orchid fever swept across Europe, leading to intense orchid collecting and hybridization. This obsession resulted in the discovery of new species and the development of countless orchid varieties we enjoy today. So, when you gaze upon your orchids, remember that you are adding to a centuries-old tradition of admiring and nurturing these extraordinary blooms.
Watering
Watering orchids can be a delicate balancing act. These plants require consistent moisture, but overwatering can lead to root rot. To strike the perfect balance for orchid requirements:
- Water your orchids only when the growing medium feels dry to the touch, usually every 2 weeks or so, but that is for you to judge.
- The way I have been watering, which works for me, is to completely submerge the roots and growing medium in water for 15 – 20 minutes, and then properly drain. (Don’t tell anyone, but I once left it for 4 hours!).
- Use room temperature water and apply it directly to the growing medium, avoiding wetting the leaves or flowers. The tags that come with orchids will often instruct you to water them with ice cubes. NEVER do this, it is a marketing scheme! They want you to kill it quickly, so that you keep buying orchids. Just think about an orchid’s natural habitat; there would never be water that cold!
- Allow excess water to drain out of the pot to prevent soggy roots.
- During the winter months, reduce watering frequency as orchids enter a resting period. Maybe push it to every 3 weeks instead of 2. But again, that is for you to judge.
Sunlight
Orchids are known for their love of light, but direct sunlight can scorch their delicate leaves. Here’s what you need to know about providing the right amount of sunshine.
- Place your orchids in a bright spot with indirect sunlight, like a south or east-facing window.
- Avoid exposing them to harsh afternoon sun, which can lead to leaf burn.
- If you notice leaves turning yellow or developing brown spots, it may be a sign of too much sunlight. Move your orchids to a slightly shadier spot.
- Give them as much indirect sunlight as humanly possible.
Growing Medium
Choosing the right growing medium is vital for orchid care and development. Most orchids are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants in their natural habitat. To mimic their preferred environment:
- Use a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for orchids, such as these bark chips, sphagnum moss, or coconut coir.
- Avoid using traditional potting soil, which retains too much moisture and can suffocate the roots.
- Repot your orchids every 1-2 years, preferably after they finish blooming, to refresh the growing medium and provide ample space for new root development.
Fertilizer
Orchids are light feeders, and applying the right fertilizer will keep them healthy and encourage blooming. Follow these simple guidelines:
- Use a balanced orchid fertilizer with a ratio of 2-2-2 or similar.
- Dilute the fertilizer to half or even a quarter of the recommended strength to prevent fertilizer burn.
- Apply the fertilizer every time you water (that’s right) during the active growing season (spring and summer), and reduce to about once a month during the resting period.
Care while Blooming

When your orchids are in full bloom, they deserve a little extra attention. Follow these tips to ensure long-lasting and vibrant orchid blooms:
- Avoid moving or rearranging your orchids as this can disrupt their blooming cycle.
- Keep orchids away from drafts or sudden temperature changes, such as near air conditioning vents or open windows.
- Mist the leaves occasionally to provide added humidity, especially in dry environments.
Ensuring Future Blooms
Re-blooming orchids can be an exciting endeavor. With proper care, your orchids will reward you with beautiful blooms year after year. Here are some pointers to encourage future blossoms:
- Remove the spent flower spikes, up until about 2 nodes, to help the orchid to conserve energy.
- After your orchid finishes blooming, continue regular care to allow the plant to store energy for future growth.
- Provide a 4-6 week resting period for your orchids, reducing watering and fertilizer frequency.
- To trigger blooming, expose your orchids to a slight drop in temperature (around 10-15°F) for a few weeks.
- Some orchids require a period of darkness to initiate blooming, so consider covering them or moving them to a darker location for 12-14 hours a day.
Frequently Asked Questions
A combination of bright indirect sunlight, a loose growing medium (such as wood chips), warm water when the growing medium is dry, and an application of fertilizer with every watering. Following this guide will ensure that your orchids will survive for years to come.
After a successful bloom, remove the spent flower spikes and provide a 4 to 6 week resting period, where you reduce watering and fertilizing frequency. Additionally, expose your orchid to colder temperatures (10-15°F less than the original temperature) for a few weeks, as well as darkness for 12 to 14 hours every day.
Although the manufacturers put this on the orchid labels, you should never water your orchids with ice cubes. They say that so you kill your plants and you have to buy more from them. Instead, water your orchids with warm water to mimic their native habitat.
Conclusion
Caring for orchids may seem daunting at first, but with these simple steps, you’ll become an orchid expert in no time. Remember to provide the right amount of water, sunlight, and a well-draining growing medium. Don’t forget to occasionally fertilize and give extra care during the blooming period. By setting the stage for future blooms, you’ll enjoy a continuous display of exquisite orchid flowers for years to come. Now, go ahead and let your green thumb work its magic on these stunning plants! Happy orchid growing!
